The Legend of Sidd Finch
Do you believe?
If you haven't ever heard of Sidd Finch, then you are in for a treat. A "Buddhist monk" with a 168-mph fastball, Sidd Finch first appeared on the sporting scene in a 1985 issue of Sports Illustrated, then mysteriously vanished with his Duke dropout girlfriend Debbie Sue Palmer and has not been heard from since.
What little is known of the strange lifestyle of Sidd Finch has been documented by George Plimpton in his novel The Curious Case of Sidd Finch, written in 1987. The publishers insisted on calling the work a novel, even though Plimpton continually insisted (and still does) that it is purely non-fiction.
An update on the Sidd Finch situation was conducted by Sports Illustrated during the late nineties and published in an article on July 31, 2000. Unveiled in this article was the cover-up scheme laid by the magazine in 1985 as well as recent "sightings" and rumors of Finch himself.
All documentation concerning this affair is published here on the web with the exception of the book by Plimpton. I urge you to read the stories for yourself, weigh the evidence, and then ask yourself if you believe in the legend of Sidd Finch. I do.
